Harris County, TX – A woman has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after being convicted in the car accident death of a Harris County deputy. Click2Houston reported that the woman, Kelly Jo Ivey, was also fined $10,000 after a jury found her guilty of intoxication manslaughter over a 2014 crash that killed Deputy Jesse Valdez III.
Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman is quoted as stating of the verdict “As I sat through testimony a couple days ago, we saw how complex this case was and how well-prepared the District Attorney's Office was in pursuing this case. We are very pleased with the outcome.”
Valdez’s mother also spoke after the verdict saying it brought the family closure. Says Deborah Valdez “I could not have done this without the Harris County Sheriff's Office. This is not something you plan for in life. I always dreaded that proverbial knock on the door, if you will, for this type of career, but they were beside me the whole way.”
