U.S. - New research shows that thousands of people in the U.S. are sent to emergency rooms each year with supplement related complications. NBC News reported the total is more than the number of people sent for issues arising after taking prescription stimulants.
The government researchers calculated that approximately 23,000 people are sent to the ER annually after experiencing an issue with a supplement or vitamin pill. A number of the cases; however, are said to involve children taking a supplement by mistake and older adults choking on larger pills.
The researchers are quoted as writing in their report “More than one quarter (28 percent) of emergency department visits for supplement-related adverse events in our study involved young adults between the ages of 20 and 34 years.”
The researchers also wrote “Weight-loss or energy products caused more than half these visits, commonly for cardiac symptoms.”
Data from the National Center for Health Statistics shows that over half of Americans took some type of dietary supplement in 2003-2006.
The recent study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
